Arthur Josiah Morgan 1846–1922

Watch Case Maker · Fairmount, Clarendon Street

⏱ Watchmakers Trail – Stop 4

Arthur Josiah Morgan was a watch-case-maker born in Surrey in 1846. In 1871 he travelled to the United States and spent about five years working in Pennsylvania, gaining experience in the American watchmaking industry which was at that time pioneering the mass-production techniques that would eventually challenge the Coventry trade.

On his return to England he settled first in Aston, Birmingham, and was recorded in Moor Street, Earlsdon by the 1891 Census. He served as foreman at Rotherham’s & Sons, the well-known clock and watch manufacturers.

He eventually settled at Fairmount, his home in Clarendon Street, where he spent his later years. Arthur’s grave is in London Road Cemetery.
